Circle A Goats specializes in raising the Spanish goat breed, one of the most efficient and hardy meat and brush-eating goats in the U.S. As a Certified Spanish Goat Breeder, Circle A Goats continues to select specific traits for their purebred Spanish goat breeding program and DNA registration.
The Spanish goat is a local landrace* breed and has variations between sources, ranches and bloodlines. The primary source of our goats is the foundation Montana herd known as Smoke Ridge which is extremely hardy in both hot and cold climates.
Relative to other goat breeds, Spanish goats are considered disease and parasite resistant. The Spanish goat doe is an excellent mother and a great producer for those looking for a hands-off approach to goat farming.

*A landrace is a domesticated, locally adapted, traditional variety of a species of animal or plant that has developed over time, through adaptation to its natural and cultural environment of agriculture and pastoralism, and due to isolation from other populations of the species. Wikipedia
Origin
Originally brought to North America by Spanish explorers in the 1500s, the Spanish goat breed adapted to thrive in the wild in Mexico, the Caribbean and the southern US. Being extremely hardy and fairly self-sufficient, the Spanish goat was used mainly for crossing with other goat breeds to pass their hardy traits on to less rugged goats, and little focus was placed on the maintenance of the breed itself until recent years.
